L'immagine è quella di una chiglia rovesciata, metafora della condizione dei migranti. Essa porta un messaggio ambivalente, di angoscia, ma anche di speranza: allude alla morte rischiata in mare, dopo un calvario di privazioni dure e violenze inumane, ma la congiunzione di linee verso l’alto, quasi come mani sollevate in gesto di preghiera, suggerisce anche un anelito di riscatto, vuole essere un segno di speranza.
Il mare può essere un luogo pauroso e pericoloso, ma anche uno spazio di comunicazione e di incontro, come è avvenuto per le grandi civiltà del passato. Ci invita a non chiuderci, e a prendere coscienza che accogliere questi "stranieri" non è soltanto un atto di umanità, ma può trasformarsi, anche per noi, in una opportunità per il futuro.
The image is that of an overturned keel, a metaphor for the condition of migrants. It conveys an ambivalent message of anguish, but also of hope: it alludes to the risk of death at sea, after an ordeal of harsh deprivation and inhuman violence, but the upward lines, almost like hands raised in prayer, also suggest a yearning for redemption, intended as a sign of hope.
The sea can be a frightening and dangerous place, but also a space for communication and encounter, as was the case for the great civilisations of the past. It invites us not to close ourselves off, and to realise that welcoming these “strangers” is not only an act of humanity, but can also become an opportunity for the future, even for us
